For the 1994 DTM season, Mercedes fielded a completely new car, to compete for the title against the reigning champion, the Alfa 155: the DTM version of the new C-class was thus born. The bodywork, shaped after the road version of the car, concealed a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and a 400 hp (294 kW) V6 engine, based on the 4.2-liter V8 engine of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, . The regulations, in fact, allowed for such extensive evolutions that these cars were real racing prototypes.
Klaus Ludwig drove the new car to championship victory in its debut year, ahead of Alessandro Nannini's Alfa 155, in a dramatic final race.
Thanks to subsequent developments and refinements, this car also won the 1995 championship and came second in 1996.
