History
The concept was outrageous: Porsche built, at huge expense, 25 Le Mans challengers to qualify for ‘sports car’ status, thereby sidestepping the 3.0-litre prototype limit. The resultant 4.5–5.0 litre 917 — the largest air-cooled racing car ever — instantly rendered its prototype rivals obsolete.
Initially an unwieldy beast, the 917 was tamed for 1970 and quickly mastered its rivals. Over two seasons, it trampled the competition and won race after race, including victories at Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. Its speed, exceeding 240mph, was so remarkable that rule-makers eventually banned large-capacity race cars from endurance racing. Porsche then turned its sights to America, where the turbocharged 917 continued to dominate, cementing its legacy as one of the greatest racing cars of all time.
This model represents the 1971 Gulf-liveried 917K raced by British motorsport legend Derek Bell and Swiss driver Jo Siffert at the 1000km Monza, where it placed second behind its sister Porsche 917K.
