Lieutenant Norman "Dusty" Kleiss was a dive-bomber pilot with Scouting Squadron Six (VS-6) aboard USS Enterprise (CV-6) during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Flying the Douglas SBD Dauntless, he played a key role in the battle, scoring direct hits on the Japanese carriers Kaga and Hiryu. Kleiss was the only pilot at Midway to score hits on three enemy ships, including the cruiser Mikuma. His precise bombing skills helped turn the tide of the Pacific War. After the war, he became an instructor and retired as a captain, later sharing his story in his memoir Never Call Me a Hero.
