After years of effort, Vickers Defence Systems developed the Challenger 2 main battle tank based on the Challenger 1. This tank entered service with the British Army in 1994, with a total of 386 delivered by 2000. The Omani military later also acquired 18 of these tanks. With the advent of the Challenger 2, the British Army's Chieftain and Challenger 1 main battle tanks were gradually replaced. Although the Challenger 1 and 2 are not significantly different in appearance, the 2 features substantial performance improvements, including the use of some of the latest technologies, such as a 120mm L30 tank gun capable of firing high-penetration depleted uranium rounds. The Challenger 2 also features a gun computer control system, electronic stabilization system, all-weather observation and stabilization system, and is equipped with a 120mm gun thermal imager, NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) protection system, a pre-installed auxiliary fuel tank at the rear, and a bulldozer blade mounting point at the front.
