During the reign of Elizabeth I, England began to establish its own maritime trade routes. One of these voyages was organized in utmost secrecy by Francis Drake under the guise of a trip to Egypt. On December 13, 1577, five sailing ships left Plymouth and sailed to Alexandria (Pelican, Elizabethan, Marigold, Swan, and Benedict).
