Ghosts On Every Corner
Ghosts on Every Corner is a powerful tribute to the places we’ve loved and lost. Following his exhibition A Ghost on Every Corner, artist Mike Beer has released this book as a heartfelt homage to Christchurch — a city marked by change and resilience. Instead of using commercial kits, Beer meticulously recreated scale models of 10 significant buildings using raw materials, each chosen after speaking with locals about the places that mattered most to them — some of which were tragically destroyed in the 2011 earthquake.
“It’s called Ghosts on Every Corner because something might disappear physically, but the memory — the ghost — still lingers,” says Beer. “For instance, I used to hang out with friends at Java, a café on the corner of High and Lichfield Streets. That place is gone now, but the memory is still there like a ghost. That’s what this project represents.”
Accompanied by insightful writing from Dr Reuben Woods and evocative photography by Dave Richards, the book adds depth to Beer's meticulous models — known under the name Ghostcat. Ghosts on Every Corner explores the emotional connections we hold with familiar spaces, highlighting the importance of memory, community, and storytelling. From Wizards Arcade to the Canterbury Sale Yards, it captures a slice of Ōtautahi’s past that still resonates with those who remember their favourite haunts — a love letter in miniature to the city and its stories.
