History

The Handley Page (HP) Victor was a jet-powered, strategic bomber that, along with the Avro Vulcan and Vickers Valliant, was a crucial element of Britain's nuclear deterrent in the early Cold War period. Initially intended for long-range, low-altitude missions, it was later reassigned to aerial refuelling as its strategic bombing role diminished.

In response to the RAF's demand for enhanced tactical agility and a higher operational ceiling, the B.2 model, featuring more potent Rolls Royce Conway engines, was introduced in 1959. A total of thirty-four units were manufactured, with several later modified for reconnaissance and refuelling tasks.

Two RAF squadrons were established with the B.2 upon its 1962 service entry, but it was soon replaced by the B.2R, a variant capable of carrying 'Blue Steel' nuclear missiles in addition to free-fall nuclear bombs. With the advent of submarine-launched Polaris missiles in 1969, the Victor gradually phased out of its nuclear deterrent role.
