History

In May 1965, the Defence Ministries of France and the UK embarked on a collaborative project to create a supersonic trainer and tactical strike aircraft. France had already selected the Brequet 1221 design, which, along with the Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca Adour engine, formed the foundation of the Jaguar. Design responsibilities were shared between Brequet Aviation and the British Aircraft Corporation, leading to the formation of the joint company SEPECAT to manage production.

The initial two-seat Jaguar trainer took to the skies in September 1968, followed by the first single-seater in March 1969. The RAF received its first GR.1 aircraft for operational use with 54 Squadron in March 1974, while the French Air Force introduced the type earlier in June 1973. The RAF's GR.1 was a single-seat, all-weather strike and ground attack fighter equipped with NAVWASS (navigating and weapons aiming sub-system), allowing it to engage targets without radar.

Primarily stationed in Germany, RAF Jaguars were used for rapid deployment and regional reinforcement, with some tasked with tactical nuclear strike missions carrying the WE177 bomb. Enhanced GR.1A Jaguars participated in the 1990 Gulf War, completing 612 combat missions without any losses. The last Jaguars were withdrawn from RAF service in April 2007.
