History

The Consolidated B-24 Liberator, the second of America's significant four-engine heavy bombers during World War II, was developed after the Army Air Corps requested Consolidated to manufacture B-17 Flying Fortresses. Dissatisfied with this task, Consolidated suggested they could design and build their own bomber within the same timeframe needed to set up production lines, claiming it would surpass the Flying Fortress.

The XB-24 prototype's maiden flight on 29th December 1939 revealed a markedly different aircraft compared to the B-17 Flying Fortress. With its high-mounted slender wings, deep yet narrow body, and twin-tail design, it bore a resemblance to a maritime aircraft.

Introduced to the USAAF in 1941, the B-24 Liberator was mass-produced and operated across all theatres of the Second World War, playing a crucial role in the Allied victory.
