The Panzer IV was a medium tank produced by Germany during World War II. Originally designed to support infantry and operate in conjunction with the Panzer III, which was specifically designed to attack armored forces, it was converted into a main battle tank for armored divisions when the overall performance of the Panzer III became insufficient for the needs of armored warfare in the mid-war period. The Panzer IV, with its more mature technology and greater potential for improvement than the Panzer III, was thus converted into a main battle tank. At this time, the Panzer IV was of higher quality than most Allied tanks, even being referred to by Allied soldiers as a "special Panzer IV." Its greater potential for modification also led to frequent conversions, making it one of the most versatile tanks, modified into assault guns, self-propelled anti-tank guns, ammunition carriers, and bridging tanks. From the beginning of the war until its end, Germany produced over 8,800 Panzer IV tanks or their modifications. The Panzer IV participated in almost every battle and was extremely reliable, unlike the early Panther models which suffered from numerous technical problems, earning it the nickname "Warhorse" among German armored troops. Besides its use by Germany, the Panzer IV was exported to other countries, and even after World War II, some countries continued to use it in combat.
