The DouglasA-26Intruder (renamedB-26 between1948 and 1965) was an American-made multi-role twin-engine light bomber/attack aircraft. It was built by Douglas Aircraft Company in response to a tender from the United States Army Air Forces. It saw action in conflicts during World War II and the Cold War. By1969, only a limited number of highly modified versions (renamedA-26) remained in service.
Combat experience has proven that theA-26fighter jet has a high flight speed and its actual payload is twice its designated payload. TheA-26can also be equipped with various cannons, upgrading it into a powerful ground attack aircraft.
The aircraft first saw combat in the European Theater onNovember19,1944,withthe Ninth Air Force. It participated in the final months of World War II in both the European and Pacific Theaters. After the war, the "Invader" was one of the first NATO aircraft to support Europe. It also participated in the Korean War with six squadrons. Furthermore, it saw action in the Pacific War, the First Indochina War, and the Bay of Pigs Invasion.
The lastA-26attack/bomber served in the U.S. Air National Guard. It was retired by the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard in1972and donated to the National Air and Space Museum.
