In 1974, Grumman received a contract to develop the EF-111 series of electronic warfare aircraft based on the existing F-111A airframe. The aircraft first flew on March 10, 1977, and deliveries to operational units began in 1981.
The EF-111A "Raven" retained the F-111A's navigation system, primarily using an AN/APQ-160 radar with terrain correction capabilities. However, the Raven's most significant feature was Raytheon's AN/ALQ-99 electronic warfare system, developed from the ALQ-99 system used on the Navy's EA-6B "Prowler." Its main electronic equipment was housed in the belly weapons bay, with a 4.9-meter-long "canoe" radome on the belly housing the transmitter unit; the total weight reached 2,700 kg. The receiver was housed in the electronics bay at the top of the vertical stabilizer, similar to the EA-6B. Extensive upgrades to the aircraft's power generation and cooling systems were necessary to support these systems. The cockpit was also rearranged, and all flight-related equipment was reinstalled on the pilot. The navigator's side controls and throttle were removed, and instruments and controls for electronic warfare officers were installed there.
