Ansett ordered this Electra with Lockheed in December 1958. It was first flown as VH-RMB in February the following year. It arrived at Essendon after the delivery flight on April 09 the following year. It operated its final passenger service on May 06, 1971 and was withdrawn from service and stored at Essendon. It was then converted to a freighter for Ansett Airlines of Australia Air Cargo, operating its first freighter revenue service Melbourne (Tullamarine) – Launceston in October 1972. It’s last freighter service was Melbourne – Hobart – Launceston – Melbourne as AN1443/4 on January 29, 1984. A chequered history in the US followed before being finally withdrawn from use and placed in open storage at Opa Locka Airport – November 09, 1996. It was scrapped on site at Opa Locka Airport in March 1997.
