The RenaultR35was a French light infantry tank used in World War II.Designed in1933 andput into production in 1936, it was intended as a light infantry support tank, equipping independent tank battalions and then redistributing them to infantry divisions to assist in offensive operations. For this purpose, it had relatively good armor, but was slow andlacked anti-tank capability due to its short-barreled37mmgun. After the outbreak of war, to address this deficiency, it was refitted with a more powerful long-barreled gun inApril1940, becoming the Renault R40. This new tank was put into production at a new factory after the outbreak of war, andapproximately1,685 were completed byJune1940.The R35/40 was the main equipment of the French army during the French Campaign. The R35 was also exported to Poland, Romania, Turkey, and Yugoslavia. During the war, Germany and its allies converted some captured R35s into tank destroyers.
