Since 1993, the U.S. Army has equipped itself with the M1070 tractor and the M1000 Heavy Equipment Transport (HETS) semi-trailer. The tractor is manufactured by Oshkosh Trucks, while the trailer is manufactured by Systems & Electronics Ltd. of St. Louis. The HETS can transport equipment weighing up to 70 tons, primarily Abrams main battle tanks, but it can also transport other large military equipment, such as loaders and various tracked vehicles. It can operate on highways, medium-paved roads, and off-road environments. Adopting the HETS significantly enhances the army's mobility and combat capabilities in diverse environments. The M1070 tractor features first and last axle steering, a central tire inflation/deflation system, and a cab that accommodates six people, including two drivers and four tank crew members. The M1000 semi-trailer is equipped with a follow-up steering system and adjustable hydropneumatic suspension. The entire system can be airlifted by C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft.
