One of the most successful projects of the newly formed company was the Model 17 aircraft, named the Staggerwing after its unconventional biplane configuration, whereby the upper wing was positioned to the rear of the lower wing. In the middle of the Thirties appeared the D17 modification, which became popular among pilots. Before the USA entered into WWII, the Staggerwing had various occasions to join the fighting in the sky; in Spain, and in the confrontation between China with Japan.
After the United States entered into World War II, at least 118 Beechcraft Model 17 were requisitioned from private owners for army needs. The Beech D17 quickly became useful as a courier aircraft. Soon the military placed an order with Walter Beech's company for a further 270 of the type. Planes which were taken on by the Army were designated the UC-43, while machines which were delivered to Naval Aviation became the GB-1 and GB-2. There were no differences between the army and naval versions of the aircraft, except for the fact that navy aircraft were obliged to have on board a basic set of rescue equipment in case of emergency landing on water. The majority of the GB-2's joined the Naval Air Transport Service, where they were used until the final days of World War II. Their principal work during the whole period of war was the fast delivery of military staff and also important mail from the bases in Britain nearest to the continent. Often, navy planes with a characteristic marine blue coloration were based on airfields right next to military machines in their protective olive color, immediately distinguishable from them by their exterior. Britain's Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm received the Staggerwing under the Lend-Lease agreement. The British, traditionally, gave the plane their own name of Traveller, with the unusual spelling for an American of double 'L' letters.
According to the deal, the British should have received 107 machines of this type, but at least 12 of them never reached the shores of 'Foggy Albion', when their U.S. transport was attacked by a German submarine and sunk. The other 95 (60 former UC-43 were named the Traveller Mk.I, and 25 GB-2 the Traveller Mk.II) were spread throughout their territories under seven commands overall, and some machines were even sent to the Near East. The tasking of the aircraft, as by the United States, had a similar aim - fast courier service between distant bases, and delivery of important communications. After the end of the war, all Travellers should have been passed back to the U.S. in accordance with the terms of the Lend-Lease agreement, but some of them nevertheless found their way into the hands of new private owners in the UK.
The Beechcraft 17 did not achieve the fame of such fighters as the Mustang, or bombers like the Flying Fortress. However, its apparently minor contribution to the overall victory in the war was actually quite significant. The quick reaction of the military leadership to operational events often depended on the working connection between distant military units or the immediate delivery of secret orders, and therefore the Traveller could be considered not only one of the most elegant aircraft of its time, but a very important military machine.

The practice of converting airplanes with standard wheeled undercarriage into floatplanes, to permit them to touch down on the surfaces of lakes and reservoirs, was established in the early days of WWI, when military aircraft of various kinds (fighters, secret agent transports, even bombers) had to operate in areas where bodies of water were plentiful. This innovation was evidently a very successful type of design, and, in spite of the widespread distribution of such comparable airplanes as flying-boats and amphibians, it continued to be employed in the post-war years for various categories of aircraft.
The conversion was useful for small commercial airplanes which could then land on the surface of lakes or even ponds with sometimes limited water area.
The Staggerwing airplane from the Beechcraft firm was a good example of this kind of machine, being ideally suited for such tasks. It was very fast for its time, and had very short take off and landing runs. In 1935 a B17L was experimentally re-equipped with a set of EDO type floats, each with a displacement of 452 pounds. One airplane was purchased by Thomson Airways from the state of Maryland. It featured in the Hollywood film "Too Hot to Handle" in 1938 with the world famous stars Clarke Gable and Myrna Loy in leading roles.
After that machine, floats were fitted to other versions of the Staggerwing. Apart from the United States of America they were also used in Canada (in 1940 that country's Ministry of Transport purchased the SD17 for use on the Great Lakes) and in Australia (one machine was used at least until 1944).
With the onset of WWII, and especially after the USA's entry into the war in December of 1941, a great number of civil machines were requisitioned by the government for military use. Some float Staggerwings had this fate, along with their land based equivalents, and were given the military designations of GB-1 and GB-2. These airplanes were used both in the mainland USA and in more remote areas of the country, in Alaska. Their active service was quite extensive: they had to look out for potential saboteurs entering the country and their attempts to damage large reservoirs. Certainly, the likelihood of such a situation was small, but it did not diminish the part played by the Staggerwing in military applications.
After the end of the war the former civil, then military, airplanes became mainly civil again, being released by the government to civil aviation once more, to airline companies and private owners. This was especially true in aviation, as from 1919 until the early 1930s the country was prohibited from having military aircraft under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Numerous technical developments, which were mostly worked on in secret during the bans, were now converted into prototypes in a short period of time and, after testing, immediately put into production and then transferred directly to the military.
The 1930s were still a transitional stage in aviation technology. All-metal monoplane designs, which Germany was the first to use during the First World War in the battles on the Western Front, were still exotic and unusual to see even more than 10 years later in a wide variety of aircraft categories. This era was the "golden age" of biplanes, which, although passing through their twilight years, were nonetheless considered more reliable and therefore more acceptable to the typically conservative military leaders.
In 1935, when the famous He 51 biplane fighter was already tested and proven, another aircraft appeared, purposed for the same role and structurally similar, the Arado Ar 68. Despite the fact that in comparative testing of the two types, the development from Arado displayed better performance, the military still showed a preference for the He 51 and soon it joined the ranks of the Luftwaffe in large numbers. Nevertheless, the newly appointed Chief Inspector of Fighter Aviation and famous ace of the First World War, Ernst Udet, insisted to his longtime comrade and Luftwaffe commander, Hermann Goering, that the Arado design should also reach military units. He was confident in the excellent qualities of the aircraft and believed that for a trained pilot, this fighter would be superior to all other types.
Even during the aircraft's development, its designers provided a measure of standardization in areas of its design, which permitted the installation of several different types of engines. The BMW VI-7.3Z engine was chosen to modify the Arado Ar 68F. Compared to the E variant of the Arado Ar 68, which had a Jumo 210E engine, flight performance decreased slightly, but at that time the military leadership was generally satisfied and soon the Arado Ar 68F was being built in limited numbers.
These aircraft were already considered obsolete when they were delivered to the Luftwaffe and they were mainly transferred to training units, as then the famous Bf 109 was imminent, and it would surpass all previous developments. Nevertheless, the Arado Ar 68F was used not only as an aircraft for the training of novice pilots, but also in combat, mainly in secondary theaters, where the probability of a duel with a strong enemy was minimal. Some machines of this version were still in service in 1941, when the era of these archaic biplanes was coming to an end.

Bachmann Branchline (OO Scale)
Product Code: 44-0202
Scenecraft Low Relief Municipal Reinforced Concrete Housing
160mm x 18mm x 98mm

Bachmann Branchline (OO Scale)
Product Code: 44-0148
Scenecraft Railway Stables Tack Room
120mm x 72mm x 65mm

Inspired by the buildings at Bricklayers Arms Station, use the Scenecraft Tack Room with the Railway Stables (44-0147) and Keeper’s House (44-0149) to satisfy all your equine needs.
